A Christmas tree needs about 1 quart of water per inch of trunk diameter per day. A 4-inch trunk needs about 4 quarts — 1 gallon — a day. Enter your trunk size below to find your tree’s daily water need, the stand capacity you need, and simple watering tips.
Christmas Tree Water Calculator
A fresh tree drinks the most in the first few days and can take up a gallon of water in the first 24 hours.
Check the water twice a day and never let it drop below the fresh cut.
Use plain tap water only — additives are not needed. For more tree care guidance, see NC State Extension’s Christmas Tree Care page.
How to Use This Calculator
- Measure the trunk diameter in inches, across the trunk at the fresh cut.
- Choose Normal or Warm room temperature — a warm room adds 25% to the daily water need.
- Click Calculate Water Needs to see daily water in quarts, gallons and litres, plus the stand capacity you need.
Example: A 4-inch trunk in a normal room needs 4 quarts of water a day — 1 gallon, or 3.79 litres. Your stand should hold at least 1 gallon, and a 1.5-gallon capacity is recommended.
Empty or invalid input: If you leave the trunk diameter blank, or enter zero or a negative number, the calculator will ask you to enter a trunk diameter instead of showing a result. Please fill in all fields before calculating.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much water does a Christmas tree need per day?
About 1 quart of water per inch of trunk diameter per day (NC State Extension rule). A 4-inch trunk needs about 4 quarts, or 1 gallon, a day.
Do I need to add anything to the water?
No. Plain tap water is best. University research shows additives like sugar, aspirin or commercial preservatives are not needed and can make drying worse.
How often should I check the water?
Twice a day, morning and evening. Never let the water level drop below the fresh cut — the trunk seals with sap and stops taking up water.
